Ancaster Swim Team comes home with Gold from Canadian Nationals

The Ancaster Masters Swim Club came home with several first place finishes from the Canadian Masters Swimming Championship in Montreal last weekend. Four members of the Ancaster team competed in 26 events across four days May 20-23rd.

Mike Carnegie won first place in age group for three men's events: 50m butterfly, 100m individual medley, and 200m individual medley. Carnegie won second in 100m butterfly and 400m individual medley. He placed third in 200m butterfly and fifth in 100m freestyle and 200m freestyle.

Doreen King placed first in age group for women's 200m breaststroke; placed second in 50m breaststroke and 100m breaststroke; and fourth place for 50m backstroke. This was King's fourth appearance at a national swimming competition; the first was in Montreal in 1983.

Sandra Mallett competed in eight events and placed 7th in women's 100m backstroke and 8th in 200m backstroke. Mallett set new personal bests and swam more events than any other woman on the team.

Donna Stechey competed in six events and placed 7th in women's 200m breaststroke. It was Stechey's first meet at the national level.

Coach Herb DeBray was elated by the team's results. "This team met and exceeded my expectations. When you take into consideration that a four day meet is a true test that most of them had not experienced before, they all still remained focused on one thing at a time."

DeBray stayed in touch with the team over Twitter. He could keep track of their experiences and observations by reading their tweets. It also allowed him to respond to the team with comments and suggestions.

The annual competition included 128 swim clubs from across Canada, US, UK, Dominican Republic, Columbia and Russia.
