Two Ancaster swimmers brought home gold, silver and bronze medals from the 2012 Ontario Masters Swimming Championship last month in Etobicoke.
Michael Carnegie and Sandra Mallett represented the Ancaster Masters Swim Club across a variety of races in the three -day event.
Carnegie competed in six events and won two gold medals for 400-metre individual medley and 100-metre butterfly, three silver medals for 200-metre individual medley, 100-metre backstroke and 50-metre butterfly and one bronze for 100-metre individual medley. This was Mallet’s second year at provincials and she competed in four events, winning a silver medal for 200-metre backstroke. She was a finalist in 800-metre freestyle, 50-metre backstroke and 200-metre freestyle.
Team coach Deanne Dietz was ecstatic with the swimmers’ results.
“As a coach it is wonderful to have athletes who are driven and (have) focus like Mike and Sandra,” said Dietz. “ They have worked extremely hard throughout this season and their results at the 2012 Provincial Championships prove it. As this is my first year with the team, I couldn’t be happier.”
This year marked Carnegie’s 13th provincial championship and he is currently preparing for his seventh visit to the 2012 Canadian Masters Swimming Championships next month in Kelowna, B.C. Carnegie follows a regimented training schedule and is known for his positive attitude in and out of the water.
Carnegie and Mallett have encouraged swimmers on the team to race at the local, provincial and national levels. Mallet plans to continue training and participate in long-distance open water swim events this summer.
Coach Dietz said, “They are both very motivational to the other masters swimmers in our club and we are all extremely proud of them. We wish Mike all the best at Nationals.”
