Hamilton native and Ancaster resident,
Mike Carnegie, took home six medals from the Canadian Masters Swimming
Championships held in Kelowna, BC last weekend, including three gold. The event
showcased the fastest swimmers from Canada and US Masters Swim clubs.
Carnegie finished first in the 200
meter and 400 meter individual medley events and the 200 meter backstroke.
He took home silver medals in the 100 meter individual medley, 50 meter
butterfly and 100 meter butterfly events.
It was a Campbell River, BC swimmer
who beat Carnegie in the 50M butterfly event and the 100M butterfly, setting a
world record time of 56:49. Carnegie followed behind him for the second place
finish and says, “There (was) no shame losing to that guy.” Competing against
the country’s fastest swimmers is the challenge athletes like Carnegie look
forward to.

The gold and silver medal results in
these arduous events reflect Carnegie’s dedicated training regimen. This
was Carnegie’s seventh year competing at the Canadian Masters Swimming
Championships.
“Mike Carnegie is truly an inspiration
to all the swimmers at the Club,” says Linda Vanderhout, lead at the Ancaster Masters Swim Club. Vanderhout
says, “We are very proud of Mike’s results at Nationals. Mike is an elite
swimmer, but is not remotely elitist. He always pushes himself but is
encouraging to all the swimmers. Swimming is an individual sport, yet Mike is a
team player through and through.”
Carnegie has been swimming with the
Ancaster Club for over a decade and says he achieved several milestones at the
Victoria Day weekend event including the 200M backstroke gold medal finish. “I
was thrilled to break 2:30 which was my goal,” says Carnegie. His first place
finish was 2:29. However, never one to shy away from a challenge, Carnegie says
the most memorable milestone that weekend was zip lining with his daughter
through the valley at Peachland, BC.
